First Visit To Ajmer

First Visit To Ajmer

Now, Hazrat Khawaja Gharib Nawaz moved on towards ajmer. The stages ofthe journey and chiefevents on the way are briefly described as under.

Hazrat Khawaja Gharib Nawaz had the honour ofseeing the [loly Prophet Muhammad along with outstanding saints in dreams continuously for forty nights, and commanding him thus:

0 Moin-ud-Djn! Qutub-ud-Din is a friend of God. Make urn thy Caliph -and confer on him the robe.”

Khawaja Gharib Nawaz then said one day thus: “To-night, have seen in dream the Omnipotent and Omnipresent, the Giver of Bounties without measure -God, Almighty, making similar order to the effect, ‘0 Moin-ud-Diii confer on Qutub-ud-Din Khaki the robe of the Darveshes, and make him thy Caliph, since he is Our Friend, as well as the friend ofMuhammad (may peace he upon him). f-Ic is a chosen one. and We count him as Our Friend.”

Accordingly. Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, reaching Baghdad from Medina, honoured Qutub Sahib by accepting him as his spiritual disciple and Caliph in the mosque of Khawaja Abul Lais of Samarqand, in the presence of Sheikh Shahab-ud-Din, Sheilth Dawood of Kirman, Sheikh Burhan-ud-Din Muhammad Chisht.i, and She ikh Taj-ud-Din Muhammad of Isfahan, He placed oil his head the four-edged cap.

At this time, i.e. in 586 A.H., Qutub Sahib was seventeen

years old. A Prophecy, 586 A.H. (1 190 A.D.)

Khawaja Gharib Th4awaz was gifted with high spiritual powers, and the prophecy that he made about Sultan Shams-udDin Iltutmush actually came true. Baba Farid-ud-Din Ganj Shakar quotes Qutub Sahib as under:

“When in Baghdad, it so happened one day that Sheikh Moeen-ud-Din, Sheikh Ohad-ud-Din ofKirman, Sheikh Shahab- ud-Din Umar Saharwardy, and this humble being (Qutub Sahib himself) were all sitting together, when all of a sudden, Shams- ud-Din Iltutmash passed that way with a cup in his hand. He was at that time aged twelve years. When the aforesaid saints saw him, Gharib Nawaz said: Till the boy becomes king ofindia, God will not take him out from the world.”

Leaving Baghdad, he reached Chisht which is not very far from Herat.

According to Hazrat Baba Ganj Shakar, Hazrat Khawaja Gharib Nawaz reached Herat with Qutub Sahib.

From Herat, he proceeded to Subzawar (in Afghanistan). The ruler of this place, Muhammad Yadgar by name, was a profligate and a tyrant. He owned a garden on the outskirts of the city with a beautiful fountain in it. Khawaja Gharib Nawaz on reaching Subzawar entered the garden and offered prayers therein. After the prayers, he began reading the Holy Qur’an.

In the meanwhile, news reached that Yadgar Muhammad was to visit the garden and preparations, likewise, began to be made for his reception. A servant of Yadgar Muhammad, seeing KhawajaGharib Nawaz there submitted to him thus: “The tyrant is to reach here very shortly. It is not proper for you to sit in the garden any longer. Better it is if you leave the garden.”

Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, seeing the servant, so upset and perturbed, smiled and said: “If thou art really afraid, go and sit under the yonder tree, and see what the Almighty God does.” The conversation was still on when the servants began to spread the carpet near the fountain. But they were so much overpowered by the personality of Khawaja Gharib Nawaz that they had not the courage to ask him to leave the place.

In the meanwhile, Yadgar Muhammad entered the garden. Seeing Khawaja Gharib Nawaz sitting there he scolded his servants, as to why they had allowed him to sit there. Hearing these words, Khawaja Gharib Nawaz lifted his head high. The moment Yadgar Muhammad saw eye to eye, he trembled and fainted.

Seeing all this, his companions got perturbed, and fell down on the feet of Khawaja Sahib. Gharib Nawaz pointed towards one of the servants. He fetched a little water from the fountain. Gharib Nawaz recited the introductory words “In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful” on the water, and sprinkled it on the face ofYadgar Muhammad. He recovered his senses and tendered his respectful apology.

Gharib Nawaz, thereafter, issued him certain instructions. Hearing the words uttered by Gharib Nawaz, Yadgar Muhammad and his companions began to weep. Yadgar Muhammad was so much enamoured of the personality of Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, that he implored forgiveness of his sins, and offered prayers to God in thankfulness. Subsequently’ he, along with the members of his staff, won the unique distinction of becoming Gharib Nawaz’s disciples. He distributed all his property amongst the needy and the poor, and renounced the world. He began to live in the company of Gharib Nawaz.

Yadgar Muhammad accompanied Gharib Nawaz up to Shadman Fort, Gharib Nawaz finding that he was purged and purified, and had become spiritual-minded, entrusted the care of that domain and its vicinity to him and himselfmoved on to India. Journey to Ajmer via Lahore, Samana and Delhi 587 A.H. (1191A.D.)

From Shadman Fort, he reached Lahore via Multan. From Lahore he proceeded to Delhi and stopped on the way at Samana (in Patiala). Itis interesting to note here that the mother of Raja Prithvi Raj had some twelve years before pointed out to his son that astronomers had so calculated that a certain person, having such and such features will enter his kingdom, and ultimately lead to his ruin and destruction

Raja Prithvi Raj , since then, used to live very much downcast, and had appointed spies in different places to search ouL the man, if there be any, possessing the specified features.

When Khawaja Gharib Nawaz reached Samana, the spies of the Raja, finding him to be possessing the specified features, requested him to stop. Khawaja Gharib Nawaz did a little contemplation and acquainting his followers with the mandate of the Holy Prophet Muhammad refused to stop and proceeded towards Ajmer. Thus he reached Ajmer for the first time along with forty followers in the year 587 A,H.
